SiriusXM NFL Radio Summer Internship

The summer going into my senior year, I was fortunate enough to spend 10 weeks with SiriusXM's NFL Radio in New York City. In addition to my time with the NFL, I had amazing opportunities to sit in with NBA Radio, The Bennington Show, the Morning Mash Up, On Broadway, and the sports news room. This entire experience gave me professional insight into how the leading audio entertainment company in North America maintains their successful standard.

With the NFL, I learned the ins and out of how a show is run, and how communication between hosts, producers, and guests is imperative. I worked on three shows (The Opening Drive, The Blitz, & Airing it Out) as well as our live training camp tour coverage. I formed relationships with a variety of our hosts and learned so much through their structure and preparation. My responsibilities included taking show notes, transcribing interviews, running our soundboards, editing promotional audio, screening calls, and assisting with social media content. Garnering these behind the scenes skills have given me an appreciation for how much work goes into running a show that listeners may take for granted.

While I was listening in on shows, I would keep in mind soundbites that stood out to me and could use for promotional material. I made tons of promos that were sent to all the other sports channels that would play throughout the week, in an attempt to draw listeners to our channel. I would clip the certain section I wanted from the show and edit everything together, making necessary adjustments to stay at the 30 second time requirement. Using Adobe Audition, I made sure that all the levels were equal and that each piece could be clearly heard.

Show Notes

Here is an example of how I would take notes for some of our shows, ranging from 2-4 hours, with or without guests and audio. These notes were sent to every sports producer/board operator at SiriusXM to help keep records of every show and assist with highlighting key moments to later be turned into social media content.
